On VAP’s Radar: New Vegan Cookbooks For 2013

Image 10-11-13 at 11.27 PMI’m super-duper excited about the new vegan cookbooks which seem to be popping up just about everywhere, and these are not just your “run-of-the-mill” cookbooks. These are cookbooks written to please a wide variety of palettes, including the palettes of those who are dipping their toes into vegan waters for the very first time, as well as the palettes of seasoned vegans and non-vegan foodies who simply love to cook.

You can find just about any type of recipe with this influx of wonderful new gems, including recipes for desserts, slow-cookers, vegan pizza, eating raw, and so much more. How will I ever choose which ones to buy? And the authors? An impressive bunch, I must say.

Let’s take a peek into the new vegan cookbooks which caught my eye.


The Vegan Divas Cookbook by Fernanda Capobianco

I must admit that I’m most excited about The Vegan Divas Cookbook because I don’t want to live without vegan baked goods, and Vegan Divas does baked goods in the healthiest possible way. Trust me, I know how delicious everything tastes at the Vegan Divas bakery because I tried everything (and I mean “everything”) at its New York City location on the Upper East Side. FYI, the spelt donuts are my favorites. Let me add that I met the real Vegan Diva in person, Fernanda Capobianco, and she’s a total hottie. If she can eat this stuff and look like that, then I’m going to have what she’s having!


Easy As Vegan Pie: One-of-a-Kind Sweet And Savory Slices by Hannah Kaminsky

This is the fourth dessert book by the multi-talented, super-creative, amazingly impressive Hannah Kaminsky, founder of the Bittersweet Blog. I didn’t think it was possible for Hannah to top her first three books, Vegan À La Mode, Vegan Desserts and My Sweet Vegan, but she has with her extensive selection of recipes for every type of vegan pie you could possibly imagine. I can’t wait to try the Rock ‘n Roll Elvis Pie, the Banana Tapioca Pudding Pie, the Pear Praline Pie and the Skinny Mini Tart.

I am so in awe of the wonderful Hannah Kaminsky that I chose her as one of My Dream Girls For A Vegan Reality TV Show.


The Cheesy Vegan by John Schlimm

Look at the title, guys! Do I really need to say anything about why I’m excited about this new cookbook? John Schlimm had me at the word “cheesy.” I would venture to guess that cheese is the hardest “give up” for any vegan. I know it was really hard for me. So I think Mr. Schlimm’s idea to author a cookbook revolving around plant-based ways to make delicious “cheesy” meals is nothing short of brilliant. This book contains 125 plant-based recipes such as mac ‘n cheese, cheesecake and other traditional cheesy comfort food favorites. John Schlimm, you’re my hero!

Vedge by Rich Landau & Kate Jacoby

I’ve been dying to go to Philly’s Vedge, one of the hottest restaurants in the country, since my interview with a student at the University of Pennsylvania who told me how popular it was with the students there. I figured if so many non-vegan college students love it (and they’re tough nuts to crack!), then it must really be awesome. Gwyneth also sparked my interest in Vedge when I read her interview with Richard & Kate on her website GOOP. Naturally, the Vedge cookbook looks appealing given the restaurant’s stellar reputation. I think this cookbook is a “must get.”

vedge.coverThe Vegucation of Robin by Robin Quivers

In her informative post, Ellen discusses how Howard Stern’s sidekick, Robin Quivers, lost 80 pounds, transformed her health, and recovered from a recent bout with cancer by following a vegan diet. Robin adopted a vegan diet in 2001 at age 49 and in her new book The Vegucation of Robin, she discusses “how real food saved her life.”  I’m a huge “Robin fan” and have often heard her talk about her fabulous vegan food on the Howard Stern Show. That’s why I feel compelled to try her recipes. Call me “star struck,” but the name “Robin Quivers” definitely adds to my interest here.


Raw, Quick & Delicious!: 5-Ingredient Recipes in Just 15 Minutes by Douglas McNish

I became aware of this cookbook when it was mentioned on Twitter, and it made me realize that my Twitter addiction can really pay off. The words in the title of the book “quick, 5-ingredient, in just 15 minutes” instantaneously attracted me to it. Yes, “quick and easy” is definitely my style! As you may know, I believe that everyone should try to add raw vegan foods into their diet, and this book allows you to do so without having to use unfamiliar appliances or mysterious methods. It contains 175 recipes that can be prepared “in a flash” for main courses, side dishes and desserts. The Sweet Potato Enchiladas, Shoestring Jicama Fries and White Chocolate Cream are first on my list of recipes to try.

One-Dish Vegan: More than 150 Soul-Satisfying Recipes for Easy and Delicious One-Bowl and One-Plate Dinners by Robin Robertson

I’ve been using Robin Robertson’s masterpiece 1,000 Vegan Recipes for years, so when I saw this cookbook I was over the moon. Who wouldn’t want a cookbook with 150 recipes for one-dish meals? I love this idea because it sounds like less clean-up after you cook. This book contains recipes for every type of one-dish meal imaginable from stews, chills and casseroles, to stovetop sautés and stir-fries, and everything in between. I’m excited!


Isa Does It: Amazingly Easy, Wildly Delicious Vegan Recipes for Every Day of the Week by Isa Chandra Moskowitz

The title of this book should have been “Isa Does It Again” since she is probably the #1 vegan cookbook author in the country with prior bestsellers such as Veganomicon and Vegan Cupcakes Take Over The World. The beauty of this book is that it contains 150 supermarket-friendly recipes which focus on weeknight dinners for busy people in the real world. You simply can’t go wrong with a cookbook by the prolific Isa Chandra Moskowitz.

This cookbook will be released on Amazon on October 22, 2013. I can hardly wait!


Vegan Pizza: 50 Cheesy, Crispy, Healthy Recipes by Julie Hasson

In my opinion, a cookbook with 50 combinations for delicious vegan homemade pizzas is groundbreaking. The extent of my creativity in making vegan pizzas is adding a few pieces of broccoli to my pre-packaged pizza crust topped with jarred sauce, garlic, onions and Daiya mozzarella shreds. So, you can only imagine how thrilled I am about this particular cookbook which provides recipes for easy-to-make pizza doughs, in addition to the wide variety of pizzas. Once again, any book with the word “cheesy” in its title gets my vote of approval.


It’s worth mentioning that The Oh She Glows Cookbook by Angela Liddon will be released in March 2014. As you probably know, Angela is one of the most popular vegan food bloggers on the web and I anticipate that her new cookbook will be as wildly successful as her website Oh She Glows. I’m really looking forward to this one!

  1. There are so many awesome books coming out all of a sudden! I’m not sure what to buy/cook/bake first, but I think that’s a pretty good problem to have. 🙂
