Last week, I had the great pleasure of having lunch with my brother Matt at Mundo Vegan, a new restaurant which recently opened at 20 Church Street in Montclair, New Jersey. It was exciting to see the tables at this wonderful all-vegan establishment packed for lunch, especially since it’s currently operating with limited hours and days. Click here to see Mundo Vegan’s hours of operation.
I couldn’t have been more thrilled with the wholesome savory food and the welcoming environment provided by Mundo Vegan. The waitstaff was outstanding and one of the owners, Tracey, came over to our table to ensure that we enjoyed our lunch. For the record, Mundo Vegan is dedicated to quality organic, non-GMO, and palm oil free food, helping to sustain a low carbon footprint without ever compromising flavor. Gluten free food is also available where indicated on the menu.
Matt and I began our lunch with this amazing Organic Vegetable Soup containing onion, carrot, celery, parsnips, tomato, kale and quinoa. Tracey explained that its delicious savory flavor came from sofrito which is a sauce used as a base in Spanish cuisine. Yum!
Matt ordered a delicious Lentil Stew as an entrée which contained organic parsnips, carrots, potatoes, celery, tomato with spices and herbs served with brown rice and raw apple cider slaw.
I ordered Steamed Lacinato Kale with brown rice and red beans, and a raw cashew cilantro sauce on the side. Perfect! For the record, this is the type of food I love to eat.
We ordered two desserts because one is not enough: an Organic Lemon Quesadilla (gluten free lemon cake made with homemade almond meal served with warm maple berry sauce) and an Apple Crisp (gluten free oat crumble over baked organic golden supreme or stayman apples). Matt said this was the best Apple Crisp he ever had! Either dessert could be ordered with Chocolate or Strawberry Coconut based Ice Cream.
Apparently, the menu changes often, and Tracey told us about an awesome lasagna made with tofu and cashew “ricotta” and homemade sauce which was on the menu for the upcoming weekend. I fully intend to go back to Mundo Vegan to try some of their other dishes.
If you find yourself in the vicinity of Montclair, New Jersey, I strongly suggest that you pop into Mundo Vegan. If you live in or near Montclair, consider yourselves very lucky to have this restaurant nearby.
MORE VEGAN FOOD OPTIONS IN MONTCLAIR, NEW JERSEY:
I felt like I hit the vegan jackpot in the town of Montclair, New Jersey with vegan food options. The night before our lunch at Mundo Vegan, Matt and I had dinner at Mesob Ethiopian Restaurant located at 515 Bloomfield Ave. Mesob is a favorite for both vegans and meat eaters with its authentic Ethiopian food, friendly staff and warm decor.
I was thrilled to see the following words appear next to the heading Vegetable Entrees on the menu…“all vegetable dishes are prepared Vegan style.” It would be so awesome to see these words more often on the menus of ethnic restaurants. Don’t you agree?
One of the best parts of the dinner was eating the food with my hands using pieces of Ethiopian bread or Injera to pick up the food. Who says humans don’t evolve from apes? Matt and I split the Vegetarian Sampler which contained 6 vegetarian dishes, including foods such as yellow split peas, cabbage and potatoes, spicy chickpeas, collard greens and lentils.
We finished our meal with a delicious assortment of vegan cookies. If you are a coffee lover, Mesob’s Ethiopian coffee is a must try!
I highly recommend Mesob Ethiopian Restaurant, a true gem!
I’M NOT FINISHED:
While walking through the lovely town of Montclair, I spotted these signs in the window of the Trend Coffee & Tea House, located at 411 Bloomfield Avenue…
I didn’t stop in, but I was thrilled to see clear signs (literally and figuratively) that the growing trend of veganism continues. Here is a small sample of the menu, if you want to pick out the vegan options…
So as you can see, there are some wonderful vegan food options in Montclair, New Jersey.

Mundo Vegan is amazing and the lasagna tastes like my mother’s lasagna, and she grew up in Italy!
Also, I just discovered that “Trattoria Rustica” in Montclair has a vegan menu on Wednesdays by SO Tasty Vegan Chef Sally Owens.
